What can I say, I am hooked. Every time I watch one of these Kranked videos I really sit back hoping I can slam a horrid review on them just to change the pace but sadly, this is yet again, not the case. This movie is great! Better than anything they have done before, the scenery alone is over the top, the photography is fabulous, every shot could be a still frame. The entire package still has me loving music I should be hating, the riding... Fuhghettaboutit!
The theme of this wonderfully exciting mountain bike tour de force is "Who is insane? Us or them?". Now this film features a number of riders doing stunts which are clearly insane. Riding in areas that only the fool hearty would even think of riding and they make it look deceptively easy, and more importantly excruciatingly beautiful.
Truly exuding freedom and the feeling of flight, these occasionally earthbound musicians of two wheels soar, vault, slide, plummet and leap in bike mounted pirouettes, and our hearts soar at the painful beauty. Dangerous? Absolutely - donot try this at home! But there is a subtext. Occasional cuts to industrial abuse, military mayhem, political insanity, in other words the nightly news. These ask the simple question, who truly is insane us or them?
Kranked 7 begins as a young boy rides out of his house over to a friend's house and we are subtly treated to a roll of sponsors for the film. It is simply the most creative sponsor reel I have ever seen anywhere, but not only does it show us that ever present theme of the freedom of our first bike ride, it also evokes the question, just how crazy is the rest of the world? They state metaphorically, "Yes, what we are about to show you is crazy, nay, insane beyond words, but it simply pales in comparison to the dead end hill slide mankind has embarked upon so, F--k it we're gonna ride until we can't." It simply makes more sense. And ride they do! I will not demean the incredible expertise of these talented athletes with any attempt to describe their art, nor will I paint with words a picture that will fall far short of the beauty you are about to behold.
Buy this movie and watch it repeatedly, it may be the best spent time you spend this year!
P.S.- (and I never say this) Once you are exhausted... watch the bonus features!
