When you are hustling through your morning ride in the midst of summer heat and humidity, dodging busses, taxis and overzealous commuters, nothing is more important than having your stength and wits about you. Bonking is not only an inconvenience but a potential disaster. Losing your mental focus can let your line get sloppy and your attention to your surroundings fade. This is when the worst can happen.
How do you avoid bonking? The answer is simple but the true solution can be elusive. You need to maintain hydration, while providing fuel and electrolytes. This might sound easy but there are tremendous amount of choices on the market for sports beverages. All of them are still in business which means that the perfect all encompassing solution for everyone does not yet exist. With that being said, different companies are putting out better and better solutions (no pun intended) each year as their research turns up new information about how the body works under the stresses of physical exertion.
When I first began training on the bike, a friend recommended I use Cytomax. Since I was a beginner and my friend was an experienced triathlete, I took her advice. I really never have been sorry that I did it either. I have tried several different sports beverages since then and none of them thus far has worked as well for me as Cytomax. The palatability of the drink is crucial because if it tastes bad, you won't drink enough to stay properly hydrated. In my opinion the key to palatability is an innocous flavor. You will be training for hours a day and months out of the year (if not the entire year). Even if the drink tastes really good, eventually it will get to you and you wont like it any more. Cytomax has developed some flavors that aren't offensive in the least. Additionally, if you mix it slightly weak, there are still enough carbs and electrolytes to sustain a fairly high level of exertion and the flavor is barely there but still sweeter and more thirst quenching then water.
From my experience, the proprietary mix of sugars that Cytomax uses provides a more balanced, stable and longer lasting supply of energy then most sports drinks. I have found that other beverages, give you a quick boost but then let you down shortly thereafter. Cytomax employs a blend of salts rather then one type, to formulate the electrolyte portion of its beverage. This helps to support multiple functions of the body. Cytomax also claims to use herbs and antioxidants to support mental awareness, prevent muscle damage, and increase muscle output before reaching lactate threshold.
I don't have the means to test these claims but I do know how I feel. No other beverage has supported my training as well as Cytomax. It seems to me that most are not formulated for the intensity and duration of cycling. Cytomax, is!
