The Cell Safe DX4 is an intriguing product whose functionality is apparent upon first discovery. The idea of cell safe is patently utilitarian. However, in this particular evolution, the product need some serious redesign. Allow me to explain.
Cell Safe works perfectly, it completely protects whatever electronic devise it contains from shock and water damage. The padded interior and the gasketted snap closed halves of Cellsafe seal perfectly. The device floats, and its brilliant yellow color makes it very easy to keep track of. The drawback is quite simply its size.
Designed at a period where the cell phones were larger, or because it is also designed to accept a GPS even my clunky el-cheapo free phone literally swims with room inside cell safe. Although designed to fit into a water bottle cage on your bike, cell safe actually seems a bit larger than the average water bottle. Now as a roadie, my water bottles are precious to me, as are their limited number (two) so, I would not be inclined to lose one of them to carry my cell phone on a serious ride. On a casual one hour or two ride, perhaps! As a mountain biker, with a hydration pack and the more intense terrain, creek fords etc., the product once again makes great sense. On a canoe trip (planned for late July) we will absolutely use the product, and once again there the size makes complete sense, as in an upset, finding the thing would be facilitated through its size.
For a roadie, and for the modern day cell phones which are smaller than a pack of cigarettes the products needs to shrink a lot! Other than that Cellsafe does exactly what it claimed to do. It made your cell Safe!
For doing what it claims, I give it a 9
For size to hold a cell. I give it a 7
Overall that makes it an 8.
Frankly some of their pouches may be better for a roadie! Check their site!
