I crash alot! I am not a good mountain biker! These body armor CRASH PADS are made for someone who either likes to look (not possible for me) the part or actually is (I certainly am not) an extreme mountain biker! Now since I fall a lot, at least I could test the degree to which they actually leave you relatively unbruised and free from impact pain. to the extent that I once again managed to fall a lot, and to the extent that I did drive into saplings and brambles, and escaped unfazed and reasonably undamaged, I guess I did better with the body armor than without!
Dan and I made a run out to Hempstead Lake State Park and the trails there for a test ride using the CRASH PAD Body armor, for a full account of the ride just click here. Part of the ride was done just for humor and fun, but the second half of the ride wound up testing the pads more than I intended as the trails had become eroded and well, yes, I crashed a lot!
The manufacturer clearly states that the "Crash Pads do not prevent injury. So, if you're even thinking of buying these, you know the story. Don't blame us if you're sporting beyond your intelligence." So they do not claim any emiliorative benefit for their product in terms of injury, but I found that those annoying bumps and bruises and bramble tears of human flesh were reduced through their use.
Some one of the proper age and sufficient attitude could probably have a good time and enjoy wearing this product for the sake of the look alone. I would guess that these togs would help you look Rad? So hell yeah dig these out for fun!
I fully expected the armor to be insufferably hot. Surprisingly it was not. We did not slack off on the test ride, but rather we pedaled hard and long, yet throughout the ride I was very comfortable. When I got back to the house and took off the armor, I actually sweated up more, so they must have been wicking well!
In conclusion, if you are a rider of the proper attitude and age, plus you ride your mountain bike under what I guess would be termed "extreme sports" conditions, well then, this product is for you. Have fun with it, we had fun testing it! And in spite of what the manufacturer claims, this vest did keep me from a few bumps and bruises! I gave it a 9 out of 10!
