An assemblage of experts both tired and weary were pulled together on the eve of Halloween for a mission both ghoulish and critical. The journey had begun a month ago when a group of adventurers had come across a new performance enhancing substance. The substance, originally discovered in early nineteen century Ethiopia had made its way to Las Vegas, Nevada where Pedal Pushers was introduced to its existence...
Our job this evening was to evaluate several varieties of the "human powered all terrain fuel" in order to determine which was the most effective, and which the most palatable. Our test methodology had been extensively researched and critically evaluated. Our test staff had been carefully selected to create a well balanced and unbiased cross section of users.
The product had been carefully stowed away in the belly of a jet for the over 2000 miles to our headquarters, where it was stored under refrigeration until our testers could be assembled. The time was upon us. We reverently opened the foil sealed packages to growing excitement. With trembling fingers we examined several roasted nuggets from each flavor for color, texture and visual appeal.
We began the preparation, the substance that would be the subject of our examination was none other then roasted coffee beans produced by Kinetic Koffee. As we prepared the coffee we were treated to a wonderful smell wafting through the laboratory and our thoughts turned back to Interbike 2005 where we first ran into the fine folk from Kinetic Koffee and had our first taste.
What were coffee roasters doing at Interbike? It turns out that the entire staff of Kinetic Koffee are cyclists or outdoor enthusiasts. Born of the active life, Kinetic Koffee finds its niche market to be Cycle Shops.
From Kinetic's website: (www.kinetic-koffee.com) "All of Kinetic's coffee blends are certified organic, shade grown, and governed by fair trade practices. In addition to purchasing from environmentally aware vendors, they also contribute 10% of their net proceeds to charities to support worthy causes.
So, what does the "Kinetic" in Kinetic Koffee mean? The definition of "kinetic" is "energetic or dynamic" or "of or resulting from motion." To us, it's all about human powered activity, whether it's cycling, paddling, skiing or any other active sport. Participation in these activities demands enormous amounts of energy, stamina, dedication, and caffeine. As outdoor enthusiasts ourselves, we share and celebrate these attributes.
Kinetic Koffee is Human Powered all terrain fuel developed by experienced Kinetic Sculpture Racers"
Back to the test... We ran all the usual tests, our evaluation staff visually inspected the beans (Kinetic Koffee is supplied as whole bean for freshness), and checked them for un-ground aroma. We then ground the beans to filter drip fineness, visually inspected and checked the aroma of the ground product. We then used a Melita Drip system to brew the coffee. We sampled three of the Kinetic Koffee offerings, Breakfast Buzz, a medium roast, Morning Mayhem, an Italian Roast, and French Konnexion, a french roast. We all tasted each variety, sampling the brewed aroma, color and clarity.
In a further quest of the scientific process, some of our test staff cleansed their palette with cheese cake, between samples. Each blend was unique and our staff of testers found each variety pleasant immediately assigning a time of day and circumstance of consumption to each. The over all impression that our tasters came away with is that Kinetic's coffees are well developed roasts of quality beans with distinctively rich flavors. Our tasters all subscribe to the religion that is coffee and they are not afraid to spend more than a subway fare for a decent cup. All of them inquired as to how they would get their hands on Kinetic Koffee for personal use. All of them also left the test session wired like a mouse chewing on a power line. This is not coffee for the decaf set although, Kinetic does produce "dekaf" varieties for those who savor coffee but still enjoy being able to sleep.
