The first thing you notice about the Mountain Hardwear eXtend Featherweight Crew is its silken appearance. You hold this base layer in your hands before sliding it on and you feel that it is completely weightless and has a soft smooth texture. Intrigued by its luxuriance you slide it on over your head and the only thing you feel against your body is a cozy warming affect. You don't feel as though you are wearing a shirt, you just suddenly feel a warm breath over your whole upper body. This thin membrane of barely there material reflects your body's heat back to it almost instantly upon donning. Take one step forward and that minute movement rushes air in through the Base Layer, reminding you that it's there by the absence of heat around you. This base layer is remarkably breathable and allows for free flowing air to come right through.

Mountain Hardwear Men's eXtend Featherweight Crew

Under other wind blocking layers the eXtend material holds your heat in and rapidly pulls moisture away from your skin while maintaining heat and core temperatures.

On one of the test runs with the eXtend Featherweight Crew we happened to ride out in temps in the low 20's. Since I hate being cold I layered a few layers on over the Mountain Hardwear shirt. We blazed through trails for roughly two and half hours. By the end of the ride, I was nice and toasty warm yet I was not a huge puddle like I am after most rides. While loading up our gear into the van, the chilled air didn't cut me down to the bone like it normally would have in my wet post-ride gear. This is a huge plus because there occasionally are unplanned stops (such as flats) that can catch us at the wrong time. Losing your heat or catching a chill deep in the woods can be deadly. Thus, keeping dry when you are riding in extremely cold temps is incredibly important.

The eXtend Featherweight Crew is a fantastic technical material that's form fitting and functional. It lacks the bulk that could make it uncomfortable under a number of layers and wicks better then any base layer I have ever tried. It doesn't block an ounce of wind but, itís a base layer so that's ok. The addition of VisaEndurance (an odor-prohibiting finishing process) has made this base odor free, even several months into its life.
