Paceline's Chamois Butt'r works! I have been using it during some of the toughest work outs I have experienced in a while. I am doing the indoor trainer work outs in the Velo Press book "Work Outs in a Binder." They are killers. I work up a huge sweat and it is hammer down all the way. I literally spend hours doing intervals between 90 and 110 rpms cadence.
If I use Chamois Butt'r, when I get off the seat of my bike at the end of my workout, my butt hurts. But, my skin feels fine. Now normally when I use a skin lubricant, I use Bag Balm. But, when I got the Chamois Butt'r to review, I was excited to give it a try, as I know it is a popular product.
First, I reviewed the contents of the little tube. They include: water,
mineral oil, ethylene glycol monostearate (an emulsifier to keep the stuff mixed and silky feeling), stearic acid (kind of a soap), cetyl alcohol(a skin softener and surfactant - it makes the stuff float in water (wash off), stearyl alcohol (prevents skin drying and chapping), propylene glycol, and sorbitol (humectants and skin absorption aids), Vitamins E, A, and D, and then came a bunch of stuff that is basically preservatives and bacterial growth inhibitors (this is a good thing down there amidst all that sweat etc), sodium hydroxide for ph balance, and finally aloe and lanoline, both well known skin health aids.
So, basically we have pretty much an assortment of products mixed together in an attractive yellow-beige creme that is only slightly oily, and which is guaranteed to wash off your skin and out of your shorts more easily than many other chamois products, which it does! As I mentioned in my opening, Chamois Butt'r works very well.
OK I have been hedging around long enough about this. On my first and second uses of Chamois Butt'r I applied it directly to my skin. I hated the way it felt! This is a personal reaction and again I must stress that it worked none the less. The third and fourth times I used it I applied it to my chamois before putting on my shorts. This was substantially better, but honestly I was still not wild about the tactile aspects of this product. Again it worked very well, I just reacted to the feeling of it negatively when I first applied it. It did not appear to be effected by copious sweating. It did not lose its efficacy over time. I did not suffer from any chaffing or hot spots from the work out. The product works as claimed both in the work out and in the shower, and for that reason I am giving it an eight for effectiveness.
