Putting yourself at Pedros Fest means that you are a mountain biker. Whether you are new to MTB and this will be the first and only weekend of it or if you are a diehard trail urchin who practically lives on a diet of roots, baby heads, mud, and singletrack - you are here for a reason. That reason is to get yourself lost in the plush greenness of the Berkshire forest. Navigating the curvy, technical trail composed of slick mossy rocks, muddy slimed roots and pitches of ever shifting camber proves to be challenging for beginners and 10-year returning veterans alike.
Mud filled dips exacerbated by the season's heavy rain, rocky decents, and your knobby tired riding buddies all coax you further into the wood with the allure of a taste of freedom presented by a bevy of elegantly designed trails. Completely enveloped in green, you lose any thought you might have had of city, suburb, office and worldly concerns. The only thought that fills your mind is of the trail ahead.
Thousands of people camping on the nearby hillside behind you at the Pedros main area and yet, once on the trail, you can have that only man/women in the world feeling. On the occasion when you do encounter another person or group on the trail, every effort will be put forth to extend trail courtesy, followed by a "have a nice day". The interaction lasting long enough to remind you of how pleasant New Englanders are yet, not long enough to distract you from the fun you were having.
If you happen to run into one of the trail stewards, thank them. The trail system is meticulously planned and maintained to maximize the trail's challenge, durability and your enjoyment. With tons of route options, you have choices on what kind of trails you want and the level of visceral demise you want to place yourself in. The experienced will choose fast tracks with high drop-offs and big jumps. The novice will choose sweet scenic singletrack. The choices are there, with every combination and intermediary.
Returning to camp saturated in a salve of sweat and mud on a reliable old steed or a demo bike from one of the presenting vendors, caked in mud from rim to saddle.... you realize that when you get back to your life on Monday, you'll miss it...
