The Cyclocross season has been raging on since early this Fall. Against the background of this storm the stage has been set for a coupe de tete, the pinnacle, if you will, of a sport known for its utter brutality and sinister ecstasy. Since the beginning of the season, dedicated, albeit certifiable, endurance athletes have been brawling on and off-road and in the mud for their shot in the spotlight, their single opportunity to make a frenetic, yet paced assault in Providence, R. I.
Why would the elite of this bloodthirsty sport gather in Providence, Rhode Island, of all places, on this fateful weekend?
To enter the Thunderdome? "Two men enter, only one man leaves!"
No, but close!
It's the USA Cycling, Giant Berry Farms, Cyclocross National Championships. A sport that makes The Gyro Captain, Lord Humungus, Aunty Entity, Mad Max and his little Australian Cattle dog look like a couple of panzies on a milk run. All the top competitors will be here to see who is the creme de la creme, competing in conditions that can make luck just as necessary as skills and fitness.
On December 15th, the fun begins. At 7:30 am that morning the course opens. The athletes will begin warming up and at 8:30 the competition kicks off with the Fast Paced Master Women's Class where the first athletes will take to the course to test themselves against the clock, the course, the weather and each other in a sport where the word "Brutal" is an understatement.
You'll get to see who's on top of their game and whose luck has run out. Winner's will cross the finish line victorious, losers will be carried off the course in a broken heap of twisted metal, lycra, mud, rubber, and mud, frozen and still disoriented... Pedal Pushers Online will be there to bring you nightly coverage of the action. There will be tons of photos, commentary and video action... We'll be there so, you should be here! Stay tuned...
