Before, during, and even after the holidays (and there are always holidays) there are these little nuggets of sweet decadence that invade your home. It's almost impossible to avoid the temptation of such tasty morsels, especially when the pangs of hunger roll in during, or after, a human-powered excursion.
When you "give in" to your stomach's desires, what choices will you make? The "right" choice of goodie will sustain you through your individual style of riding. You will burn them off completely thus maintaining your svelte cyclist's figure. Yet, they will, of course, raise envy in your cycling compadres as they struggle to chew and swallow some crusty energy bar that's been languishing in their seat pack since last summer... What to choose?
Here are some suggestions for this Spring...
So, you are a sprinter who needs to get to the finish line ahead of the pack... or a bike messenger who needs to get that package across town "yesterday!"... You'll need simple sugars that ignite like a match when they hit your stomach. They won't burn long but they'll get you to the line or 25 blocks away to your drop. You won't want a lot of fat because fat will make your deliveries that much more difficult. The answer... marshmallowy PEEPS. Pure sugary goodness, little or no fat, gooey on the inside, crispy on the outside...
The Cyclocross season may be over but, it's never to early to get ready for next Fall. You need lots of energy to carry out heavy sprint like efforts but you need long lasting endurance energy for criterium-like events. You'll need quick explosive energy bursts. But you will also need enough gas left in the tank to jump the barricades. Put a bounce in your step with a milk chocolate bunny. The arrive complete with plenty of carbs and a decent amount of fat to burn when you need it.
The pavé calls to you... You'll need a few minutes of dynamite in your legs to kill the competition. Simple sugars will propel you long enough to get your wheel in front of those other skinsuit clad track warriors. They too have fueled up... but not with the great flavors like buttered popcorn, root beer, kiwi, wild blackberry and, our favorite, jalapeno. You reach into your jersey pocket and down those nuggets of tasty rocket fuel as you drop the pack...
You're facing up the North side of a woodsy climb pausing to gaze back, a long ascent completed. The Redwood forests loom in the distance. Dry sweet eucalyptus tickles your nostrils. You gotta chow down to keep enjoying this pleasant ride. Carbs will get you going, but you are you'll need more than carbs to hold a line on this trail. "Rock out" to chocolatey nuttiness... wolf down some rocky road macaroons. Then spin on...
