We had a chance to talk with Chris Zigmont at Pedrosfest in July of 2007 and we brought up a question we had been looking to ask him since Pedros first rolled out their green Chain Lube, Chainj. Announced at the 2007 Cyclocross Nationals, ChainJ and the new Greening of Pedros was a thread that had run through the last few times we'd heard Chris speak, so we took the opportunity to corner him and delve a bit deeper.



Chris speaks... If you look back at the history of Pedros, they've actually been a little ahead of the curve in many ways. A few years ago we launched a thing called the milk lever which was made from recycled milk bottles. We've had Biodegreaser and OrangPeelz have been biodegradeable Earth Friendly cleaners and things along those lines, so its always been a thread in our ethos.

But we went through a bit of a change about 18 months ago. After a trip to Taiwan... I was really kind of appalled at what I saw... Three side of this factory were rice paddies, the food chain was right outside and there were workers inside happily working away. There were no respirators, they were working in flip flops, and there were bubbling vats of PVC which is the ugliest plastic known to man. And, I just decided we didn't really want to be a apart of that.



There was a lot of soul searching on a 24 hour flight back home. My first inclination was to quit actually, and to say I don't want to be part of this anymore. Luckily I had a chance to have a big long nap and I woke up as we were landing into San Francisco. I thought, maybe... Maybe Pedros can be an agent of change... So I got back top the office and I said, guys, here's what I found and here's what I propose that we do....
