Rudy Project Ketyum

Rudy Project has done it again. The Ketyum fade from your perception yet accomplish all that a high quality pair of glasses should. The wrap around lenses protect your eyes from dust debris and road grit while giving full eye protection from the sun's harmful rays. As a cyclist I feel the difference in the way the sun's rays feel over the last three years. The increase is strength of the sunlight reaching the earth's surface is certainly noticeable. Sun burn on your eyes can be painful, cause added perceived fatigue and it just sucks! All of RP's lenses are specially coated to block the harmful wavelengths while allowing excellent transmission for visibility. I generally ride with an amber type lens, the ones I used for the purposes of testing the Ketyum frame were also the amber type. RP's amber (copper velvet or Racing Red) are excellent through a wide range of weather and light conditions. They cut back glare on very sunny days and retain definition on gray or overcast days.

Frame:
The frame is remarkably light and flexible. The Ketyum's are extremely comfortable. For this product RP has added a new feature in the form of a spring loaded temple. Very nice touch to an already exceptional product. The temple pieces are slightly shorter then usual, only coming to just above the ear but the spring loaded temple sticks them to your head for a sure hold with negligible pressure and without fear of them falling off. The use of high end materials makes the frame extremely moldable which means that these glass can fit anyone's head for total comfort. As you can see in the picture above, my head is fairly odd shaped and I have a big schnoze, yet I was able to dial in a perfect fit on these glasses in seconds and then forget about them completely. Another great feature of these frames is the ease with which you can switch the lenses. As is true with most of the Rudy line, the Ketyum have an interchangeable lens system. This allows for quick change of lens to suit the day's light conditions. The great thing is that this frame is the easiest to change out of any other frame I have tried.

Cool Factor:
Hey, look at the dude wearing the glasses above... Totally uncool, right? But with the glass on, Radical! Nuff said? The frames are a slim, unique, minimalist design that showcase the materials as design elements. I am a strong believer in combining minimalism and functionality. The Ketyum are the best looking pair of Rudys yet.

These glasses are all around great! Fantastic even. There are only 2 potential drawbacks I see with the Ketyum. One is that because of the slightly shorter temple pieces, the glasses should sit farther back so that the part of the frame that holds the lens is back near your forehead. If heat gets trapped inside you may get some fogging in cooler weather conditions. But Rudy lenses do have anti-fog coatings...

What can I say? Our Christo ride provided an opportunity to try on my first pair of Rudy Project Ketyum Eyeware. To refer to them as sunglasses belies their true purposefulness. They are eye protection systems, not merely glasses. Included in the basic package are the Bronze lenses and the clear, also included is a semi-hard case with storage flap for the spare lenses and a snap secured belt loop.

I have used Rudy Project Glasses for three years now and I have never been disappointed with them. These Ketyum were no exception. Out of the box, with no adjustment whatsoever, they clung to my face like they were made for it. After five minutes once again I forgot they were there. Even though the skies were overcast for our tour of the Christo Installation, the reflective snow bounced enough light around to make my eyes uncompfortable, but the bronze lenses cut it back just enough. The lenses never fogged on me and as I mentioned earlier there were no slippage issues.

Cool Factor:
I can absolutely recommend the Rudy Project Ketyum without reservation. If you can go the freight they are worth every penny and more! Plus Rudy Project Products are effectively warranted for life, The frames have a three year defect warranty but you can also get a "Good as New" option for replacements for a mere 50% of retail pricing, lenses are basically replaced for a $14.95 service charge if you send back your old ones, and if you send back two pair of lenses they replace the second set for just $5.00 so you can;t really go wrong or wear 'em out!
