Occasionally I find myself wondering of we are actually reviewing products fairly or not. The simple reason for this is because I am so often pleased with the products and their performance. Are we easily impressed? Frankly, I don't think so. We pretty much demand that the products we review live up to their advertised claims and that they provide real benefit to the consumer. If they do not, we do not hesitate to slam them.
I honestly thought that I would have the chance to do so with this product. But I am afraid that I do not. The Transition Jersey from Mountain Hardware is extremely comfortable to wear and covers an outstandingly wide range of temperatures with equal ease and efficiency.
The hanging tag says,"The freedom of a base layer, lightweight insulation and windproof shell all in one garment."
"WINDSTOPPER N2S garments pair the legendary windproof and breathable comfort of windstoppper fabric with the dryness of a highly effective moisture management layer. This powerful combination eliminates the need to wear separate wicking and windblocking layers. The inner fibers of WINDSTOPPER N2S fabric remove perspiration from the skin. The windstopper membrane allows that moisture to easily pass through and stops it from returning, all while blocking the chilling effects of wind. The results-Lightweight comfort and freedom from adding or subtracting layers whether hiking, trail running, biking, skiing, snowboarding or participating in other outdoor activities."
I found it all to be true!
When I first opened the bag in which the Transition arrived and removed it from it's filmy grasp, I thought, ugh! The feel of the jersey reminded me vaguely of the feel of the soft white foamy slip pockets laptops come delivered in. It was vaguely rigid, and yet compliant at the same time with a definite plasticity about it. I put it back into the plastic bag, and packed it with my city commute kit.
When time came to review it, I slipped my arms into it, and zipped it up. I was instantly comfortable. What I thought might be a plasticine texture felt as comfortable as a silk set of long johns. The particular morning we did our test ride was a bit nippy, we had been experiencing a delayed spring, and I was afraid that the jersey would not be enough to keep me warm. But as luck would have it, I was running late and as a result I bolted out the door with no other warming layer in tow. I didn't need it! The Transition was well designed for precisely this type of day. We started out chilly enough that a normal summer weight jersey would require an under-layer and an outer jacket for adequate warmth. Here instead I pedaled out with only one layer of technical fabric.
As spring days do, this one warmed as the day progressed. I would guess that the day ranged from the upper thirties to the upper fifties and I was dry and comfortable throughout. No sweaty build up while cranking and no chills when dismounted. Damn another product that worked precisely as the manufacturer predicted. What are we gonna do?
Until this streak ends, I have to once again say, that I can recommend the Mountain Hardware Transition Jersey without reservation! This is GOOD Stuff!
