Haste makes waste, or at least so we have been told. Yet some things have deadlines imposed upon them and when it comes to fashion, delay relegates information to yesterday's news. And so I felt about a product we were shipped a while ago, a product I am only now getting to review. But as it turns out, it is a happy happenstance!
Had I reviewed the Sugoi Gusto Short when I first tried them, I might not have written as positive a reaction. However, since the shorts have now been laundered and worn by me several times, I have grown to appreciate their comfort and actually enjoy them on a casual ride.
These shorts are long! Ok, I am a roadie, and these are really Mountain Bike Shorts. My first try on of these shorts was in Chicago as I pedaled around for the "Bike Chicago" article. I found them extremely comfortable, but a tad long for a roadie. Getting a leg over a 58cm Specialized Allez proved however to be less than graceful with the extended room provided by the baggy shorts!
That being said, the provided padded undershort is extremely comfortable, right out of the box! And as I alluded to the break in period with these shorts has provided a greater comfort and better fit! Bottom line, these shorts are so comfortable that I look for excuses to wear them, even on my roadie! The copious pockets carry everything, cameras, wallet, multi-tool, anything you might want or not want to carry. They afford tremendous freedom of movement, except for that lifting the leg over the bar thing which can still be a challenge, but aside from that these shorts rock!
The Ricaro2 chamois is extremely comfortable and although substantially padded, it does not interfere with pedaling, yet provides padded comfort. There simply is no abrasion or chaffing with these shorts! Generally when I wear these shorts on a casual ride, they tend to remain on for the balance of the day, even after the ride is over! I wouldn't wear these for a hammer down roadie event, but they were never designed for that. Touring, running errands, visiting a friend, they are stylish, comfortable, and far more acceptable up at the mall than a full race spandex package! Honestly I love 'em!
